Less is More, The Pros Of Going Mirrorless

Back to Blog |

As the term “mirrorless” is slowly beginning to gain traction, more and more photographers of all levels are looking to brands and wondering whether the old adage “less is more” holds true when it comes to photographic gear as well. The good news for those buying into mirrorless camera systems is that, these days, there’s a wide range of top quality lenses and accessories to choose from.

Compact & Lightweight

One of the major advantages mirrorless cameras have over their DSLR counterparts is that they are notably smaller and much lighter in weight. This is mainly owed to the fact that these cameras’ designs omit the mirror box and prism included with DSLR cameras. The more obvious advantage to this would be the fact that long days of shooting no longer have to end in neck and shoulder pain caused by a heavy camera and lens. Another, less obvious advantage would be the fact that people generally respond more naturally to smaller, less “professional-looking” cameras. Mirrorless cameras are unassuming so it is a lot easier to capture candid photos when shooting events or street photography.

Near-Silent Performance

Mirrorless designs are a lot quieter than their DSLR equivalents. This is because there is no mirror present that needs to swing up in order for the light to reach the sensor when taking a photo. This advantage is perfect for wedding and other photographers who regularly shoot events where subtlety and an unobtrusive demeanour is best.

OLED Viewfinders

Optical viewfinders are absent in mirrorless camera models but you will find Electronic Viewfinders in higher-end mirrorless camera designs. The main advantage of the EVF is that it lets users view the scene exactly as the sensor is going to record it. Newer models feature high-resolution OLED that deliver large, bright scene views every time.
