The Destination

This wildlife photography workshop is set in the Klaserie area that borders Kruger National Park. It’s a world-renowned area of great beauty – and it’s densely populated by wildlife. Expect to encounter elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and some of the big cats, and to have exceptional opportunities to photograph them.

You’ll be staying at Dumela Lodge, a traditional thatch-roofed bush lodge. It’s rustic but very comfortable and full of charm. The lodge is home to people from around the world who are volunteering their time on community and conservation projects in the area, and of keen photographers on a mission to hone their skills. You’ll have your own en-suite room, and access to all the lodge’s facilities, including a large pool. Meals will be served in the dining area or in our braai area, under the starlit sky.

To make the most of the photo safari, we’ll offer you the opportunity to improve your photography skills through a combination of theory and practice, led by either Tim Feherty or Paul Greenway. There will be several tuition sessions at the camp that will focus on a wide range of technical aspects, including aperture, shutter speed, long exposure techniques, composition, and post-production. You’ll be able to put your enhanced knowledge into practice straight away during game drives and walks – and you’ll be accompanied at all times by professional photographers, who are available for guidance. There are also several opportunities to review everyone’s works.

Tim Feherty
More about Tim Feherty

Tim was born and raised in Bangor, Northern Ireland, and discovered his love for photography at the ripe old age of 18. Studying in his hometown and graduating with a Visual Communication degree from University of Ulster (Belfast 2001), he first started work as a photographer on cruise ships. For 5 years, also encompassing forays into video production and stage lighting and management, he has travelled through the Caribbean, Mediterranean, the Baltics, East and West coast of America, the Panama canal and Alaska. Since then, he has worked as a freelance photographer with a diverse focus; from portraiture to weddings and commercial work. Since 2014, Tim is based in the Greater Kruger area, and has changed his main photography focus to wildlife and landscape.

Paul Greenway
More about Paul Greenway

Paul started his career working as a professional photographic safari guide in some of Zimbabwe’s wildest areas and choicest camps. Ten years later he studied towards a Bachelor of Journalism (BJourn) and then Master of Fine Art (MFA) degrees, achieving both with distinction. He taught photojournalism and visual communication at Rhodes University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies for seven years, then left to fully dedicate his time to his company, 3P Photography, where he continues to work as a photographic educator and commercial photographer. He has also exhibited in a number of galleries across South Africa. Through running photography workshops, his three great pleasures, Africa’s wild places, photography and teaching are coalesced.
