More about the Take Beyond Leadership's Photographic Initiative

Groenvlei High School is based in the Groenvlei/Hanover Park areas of the Cape Flats. The school today primarily draws its pupil population from the very poor and deprived communities of Hanover Park, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Mitchells Plain and Crossroads.

The Take Beyond Leadership Project is a non-profit, Section 21 Company established in October 2005 for the purpose of designing, supporting, managing and encouraging such social initiatives as would precipitate new realities in the lives of marginalized and previously disadvantaged South African communities. The Take Beyond Leadership Project began its relationship with the Groenvlei High School in late 2011 as the teachers at that school began to grapple in earnest with what they regarded as the very urgent need to make considered, sustained, bold and creative interventions in the lives of their pupils in order to optimize the chances of success in meeting their collectively stated and agreed pedagogical purpose of opening a world of new and vibrant possibilities to their charges.

The ‘Groenvlei Future Leaders Programme’ (GFL) is part of the Take Beyond Leadership Project. The main objective of this initiative is to develop positive, ethical leaders amongst our learners. Our focus is to foster a sense of self-reliance, judgment, respect and to instill in them a sense of responsibility for their actions. Furthermore, it will develop their sense of volunteerism, Ubuntu, leadership and teamwork and develop their technical skills.

The Photography Initiative started in 2013 as a means to achieve the above-mentioned objectives. Our school partnered with Fujifilm who provided our learners with cameras, gave them the necessary training and took them on photographic excursions. This year Cameraland joined the partnership to provide the technical expertise to edit and print a selection of the learners’ photographs.
