Cameraland is one of the proud sponsors of the We Cannot Be Silent exhibition scheduled to launch at The Castle on Women's Day (9 August) next week. We hope that our community will join us by lending their support to this worthy project as we, as a nation, unite against the violent crimes against women and children in South Africa. This group exhibition uses many different forms of visual art to tell the stories of the otherwise voiceless.

A multi-media exhibition honouring the lives of girls and women in South Africa

Venue: Old Heritage Halls at the Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town
9 August – 11am: Exhibition opening with dance and music performance

When a South African woman or girl child goes missing and is found raped and murdered, a media often frenzy erupts. Headline after headline reveals gruesome details of what has become a repetitive norm. The dead woman or girl child becomes just another statistic as the news soon focuses on another tragedy or disaster. Families of the deceased are forgotten.

In response to what has become a very negative cycle, a moment to pause and reflect is being presented via an artistic exhibition honouring lost lives. By placing emphasis on the lives that have been lost, this exhibition intends to relate to viewers and the public the personal narratives.

We Cannot Be Silent is a showcase of concerned artist’s work in photography, film, dance and music performance that addresses gender-based violence. It is about creating a space for healing and hope for the many women and girls who are violently lost in this country.

Participating artists include the Jazzart Dance Theatre (dance), Malika Omar (music), The Betty Effect (music), Sumaya Hisham (photography), Nadine Cloete (film), Eunice Geustyn (visual art), Wandie Mesatywa (photography), Alexandra Deitz (photography) and the exhibition organiser Yazeed Kamaldien (film and photography).

The exhibition’s main sponsor is Cameraland, a photographic shop on Long Street in central Cape Town, while the Castle of Good Hope has offered the venue for the exhibition. Other sponsors include Zelda Productions, McWilliams & Company, Women Inspiring Solutions in Education (W.I.S.E), Heinrich Böll Foundation, Pulse Radio and Into The Castle.
