It might be hard to believe that one of the Western Cape's leading photographic stores did not start out soley dedicated to selling and distributing photographic equipment, but as a pharmacy in 1958.
As a young and innovative pharmacist, Gerald Shap opened a pharmacy in the CBD - on the same premises that the store continues to occupy today - in the previous quarters of a popular photo dealer of the time. Unbeknown to Gerald at the time, taking up the space on the conrner of Long and Shortmarket streets would open the doors to his calling and subsequent birth of Shap's Cameraland!
